Prolonged sun exposure is a well-established risk factor for cataracts, and contributes to conditions like pterygium, a growth on the surface of the eye, and macular degeneration. Our patients often accumulate more UV damage simply because of the climate. I recommend wearing quality sunglasses with full UV protection whenever you are outdoors, and a wide-brimmed hat adds another layer of defense.
