Hike of the Month: Skeleton Canyon

Narrow slot canyons twist through a badlands labyrinth carved by wind, flash floods, and geologic time. This moderately challenging, 5.2-mile loop trail in the Mecca Hills Wilderness offers an adventurous hike with 568 feet of elevation. The trail follows the San Andreas Fault through sandy washes and rocky brick-red fault gouge into sculpted ravines. Scrambling through narrow passages adds to the challenge. Take Interstate 10 to State Route 86 south, then turn left at 66th Avenue and again at Painted Canyon Road.
