“Go, your gratitude to prove,” Clara Ann Thompson wrote in her 1908 poem “Memorial Day.” “Strew the flow’rs above the heroes.” Leaving flowers on the graves of U.S. soldiers who died in war is a time-honored tradition, especially red and white blooms, which symbolize the bloodshed and valor (red) and purity (white) of those who perished in service to our country.
