An advertisement for the opening of Holiday House in 1951 billed it as “Palm Springs’ Newest, Smartest Resort Apartment-Hotel,” which packs a lot into the contradictory phrase “Resort Apartment-Hotel.” How could it be all three? Architect Herbert W. Burns made the concept work.
